Massage has a bad habit of overcomplicating itself. Therapists reach for grand explanations:
“This stroke always relaxes the nervous system.”
“That technique releases trauma stored in tissue.”
“This pressure balances energy channels.”
Sounds impressive, but here’s the truth: none of it is guaranteed. Touch doesn’t carry universal meaning. What a technique does depends on the person receiving it, in that moment, in that context.
A stroke can land as relief, intrusion, or nothing at all. A word like “release” can mean lighter muscles, emotional catharsis, or just the end of a session. The meaning isn’t hidden inside the technique—it’s created in use.
Why This Matters
When you cling to dogma, you stop listening. Believing “this technique = that outcome” blinds you to what’s actually happening in front of you. Real skill is cutting away the baggage and paying attention to practice.
How to Cut Through the Noise
Drop the metaphysics. You don’t need a story about chakras, fascia memory, or energy fields to justify touch.
Drop the universals. There’s no single definition of “therapeutic massage.” It’s family resemblance, not essence.
Drop the dogma. “This always works” is just wishful thinking. Ask what it means here, now.
The Real Craft
Massage isn’t about propping up theories. It’s about responsiveness: adjusting pressure, pace, and presence to what this client actually needs in this moment. When you strip away the illusions, massage becomes what it really is—alive, adaptive, and deeply human.
